Design Concept

For the last three years here in Pittsburgh, a nonprofit organization called “The Sprout Fund”, (www.sproutfund.org) has begun to change the cityscape by producing murals in various areas of town. These are designed to enhance the city landscape and improve certain areas by livening them with color and perspectives of art. Using the basic format achieved in Philadelphia, where over 2,500 murals adorn city buildings, The Sprout Fund has already produced 23 over the last three years. It is expected the number each year will rise, and begin to really take root.

The process involves communities and Artists being chosen to compete by designing mural concepts for different sites. After being selected by both the Sprout Fund and the Hazelwood Initiative to produce this mural, the real work began. I’ll explain the concept of design throughout the different frames.
